Maison Drago Paris, both a jeweller and a goldsmith, is a long-established manufacturer of many of the world’s presidential chains of office. Crafted in solid gold or silver-gilt, these official adornments are bestowed upon heads of states at their inauguration ceremonies.
Symbols of exception
A presidential chain of office is one of the most visible ways that the President of a Republic can embody the Nation.
In France, the presidential chain of office has been the highest distinction since 1804, symbolising the 'Grand Master' rank of the Legion of Honour. It is an accolade that only the President of the Republic can legitimately receive.
For the investiture ceremony, the President’s name and date of inauguration are engraved on the back of one of the medallions.
A unique emblem
Each collar is unique, bearing the prominent symbols of the country and the presidency that it represents.
In France, for example, the great collar bestowed upon the President of the Republic features sixteen links representing the ‘cohorts’ (or military units) of the Legion of Honour. The medallions represent the nation’s institutions and traditions: its military, industry, music, trade, and so forth. The “HP” monogram at the centre stands for Honneur et Patrie ('Honour and Fatherland'), a reference to the Legion’s motto.

There are no fewer than forty manufacturing steps between this preliminary phase and the finished collar. The process calls on a variety of types of craftsmanship, including design, stamping, carving, trimming, enamelling, gem-setting, jewelling, polishing, and even gem- and diamond-cutting.
