Since the 1930s, the various units of the French military have gradually developed their own official insignia. The tradition continued and increasingly developed after WWII.
The Defence Historical Service approves the insignia for the principal units and regiments, which are designed according to the official rules of heraldry.
However, there are no specific guidelines for smaller units or overseas operations.

Military insigniaThe DNA of Drago Paris
In the early 1900s, Joseph Séraphin Drago developed a passion for the art of engraving metal. In 1912, he began to specialise in the art of crafting military insignia, and founded his company based on the design and manufacture of artisanal metal objects, combining the skilled arts of engraving and vitreous enamel.
In 1948, Charles Emile Drago – Joseph’s son – took over the family workshop and relocated it to Paris to better serve the French Armed Forces, for whom he continued to create insignia.
