The gendarmerie is the modern form of the Maréchaussée or ‘Marshalcy’, historically a French armed force dating back to the Hundred Years’ War. Today’s gendarmes keep the peace among civilians and enforce national laws. Their uniforms are immediately recognisable, but they also wear a number of other distinctive insignia.
